10 Powerful Ways to Overcome Waswasah and Obsessive Thoughts

(From the Book: “اپنے آپ پر دم کیسے کریں” by Shaykh Shabboot bin Salih bin Abdul Hadi al-Murri)

❖ Treatment for Waswasah (Whispers and Obsessive Thoughts)

① Supplication and Humble Plea to Allah ﷻ

Allah ﷻ says:

“Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil?”
📖 [an-Naml: 62]

② Conscious Awareness of Allah’s Watchfulness

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

(( أن تعبد الله كأنك تراه، فإن لم تكن تراه فإنه يراك ))
"To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then [know that] He sees you."
📚 Narrated by al-Bukhari (50) and Muslim (8)

③ Seeking Refuge with Allah from the Evil of the Rejected Satan

Allah ﷻ says:

“And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.”
📖 [Fussilat: 36]

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Satan comes to one of you and says: Who created this? Who created that? Until he says: Who created your Lord? If it reaches this stage, he should stop and seek refuge in Allah."
📚 Narrated by al-Bukhari (2376)

④ Regularly Reciting Morning and Evening Adhkar

These Adhkar have already been mentioned earlier in the book.

⑤ Firm Resolve to Resist Waswasah and Striving Against the Nafs

Allah ﷻ says:

“And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.”
📖 [al-‘Ankabūt: 69]

⑥ Maintaining Good Thoughts About Allah and Reflecting on Shar’i Texts

Allah ﷻ says:

“And whoever fears Allah – He will make a way out for him.”
📖 [at-Talāq: 2]

“And whoever fears Allah – He will make his matter easy for him.”
📖 [at-Talāq: 4]

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The best Jihad is the one where a person strives against his own self in the path of Allah.”
📚 [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ: 1129 – al-Ṣaḥīḥah: 1491]

⑦ Repenting from Sins, As Sins Often Lead to Waswasah

Frequently, obsessive whispers are rooted in one's disobedience. Thus, one should turn to repentance and righteousness.

⑧ Ignoring and Disregarding the Waswasah

Do not pay attention to these intrusive thoughts, as acknowledging them strengthens their grip on the heart.

⑨ Adopting a State of Heedlessness Towards Waswasah

Let the thoughts fade by treating them with indifference until they gradually weaken and disappear.

⑩ Seeking Psychological Counseling

Especially from those who are trustworthy in both religious and academic knowledge, to help in dealing with persistent waswasah.
