10 Important Hadiths and Islamic Guidelines Regarding Mosques

① Virtue of Going to the Mosque for Obligatory Prayer

Abū Umāmah (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"Whoever leaves his house in a state of wuḍū’ to perform an obligatory prayer in the mosque will have the reward like that of one who has entered into iḥrām for Ḥajj."
(al-Bukhārī, 1864; Muslim, 1253)

Note: This does not remove the obligation of Ḥajj from those on whom it is due; one must still perform the actual pilgrimage.

② Virtue of Congregational Prayer

Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"The prayer in congregation is twenty-five times superior to the prayer offered alone in one’s house or in the market. Whenever one goes to the mosque after performing ablution perfectly, for every step he takes, a rank is raised for him and a sin is removed from him. When he prays, the angels continue to send blessings upon him so long as he remains in his prayer place, saying: ‘O Allah, send blessings upon him, O Allah, forgive him.’ This continues as long as he does not harm anyone or lose his wuḍū’. And when he waits for the prayer, he is considered to be in prayer."
(al-Bukhārī, 2112)

③ Greater Reward for Those Coming from Far Away

Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

"Among the people, the one who will receive the greatest reward for the prayer is the one who lives farthest from the mosque and comes walking to it."
(al-Bukhārī, 651; Muslim, 662)

④ A Heart Attached to the Mosque

Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"Seven are (the persons) whom Allah will give shade on the Day when there is no shade but His… [including] a man whose heart is attached to the mosque…"
(al-Bukhārī, 660; Muslim, 1031)

⑤ Maintaining and Beautifying Mosques

ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"Build mosques in neighborhoods, keep them clean, and perfume them."
(Abū Dāwūd, 455; Ibn Mājah, 757 – authenticated by Ibn Khuzaymah & Ibn Ḥibbān)

⑥ Glad Tidings for Those Walking in Darkness to the Mosque

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Give glad tidings to those who walk to the mosques in the darkness that they will have perfect light on the Day of Resurrection."
(Ibn Mājah, 781 – authenticated by al-Ḥākim & al-Dhahabī)

⑦ Angels Befriending Regular Mosque-Goers

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"The angels are companions to those who regularly attend the mosque. If they are absent, they look for them; if they are sick, they visit them; and if they are in need, they help them…"
(al-Albānī, al-Silsilah al-Ṣaḥīḥah, 1023)

⑧ Tahiyyat al-Masjid – Two Rakʿahs Upon Entering the Mosque

Abū Qatādah (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"When one of you enters the mosque, let him not sit down until he prays two rakʿahs."
(al-Bukhārī, 444; Muslim, 714)

⑨ Places Where Prayer Is Prohibited

Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

"The whole earth is a mosque except for graveyards and bathrooms."
(Abū Dāwūd, 492; al-Tirmidhī, 317 – authenticated by al-Ḥākim, Ibn Khuzaymah, and Ibn Ḥibbān)

⑩ Warning Against Building Mosques on Graves

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"Beware! Those before you used to take the graves of their prophets and righteous men as places of worship. Do not take graves as mosques; I forbid you to do so."
(Muslim, 532)
