“I Am the Most Eloquent Among You” – A Weak Report on the Prophet’s ﷺ Lineage and Upbringing

✿ Compilation: Hafiz Muhammad Anwar Zahid حفظه الله

❖ The Reported Statement

أنا أعرَبُكم، أنا قُرَشيّ، وَاستُرضِعتُ في بَني سَعدِ بنِ بَكرٍ

Translation:

“I am the most eloquent Arabic speaker among you. I am a Qurayshi, and I was nursed among the tribe of Banū Saʿd ibn Bakr.”

❖ Authentication of the Report

🔍 The chain of this narration is weak (ḍaʿīf).

It was recorded by:
Ibn Saʿd in al-Ṭabaqāt (1/1/71)
al-Qārī in al-Abrār (p. 116)

The chain includes Mubashshir ʿUbayd, who is:
Matruck (abandoned in ḥadīth transmission).
📚 Referenced in al-Rawḍ al-Anuf by al-Suhaylī (1/295)

❖ Conclusion

Though the content of this narration aligns with well-known aspects of the Prophet’s ﷺ upbringing — that he belonged to the Quraysh and was nursed in Banū Saʿd ibn Bakr, and that he ﷺ possessed the highest level of eloquence in Arabic — the specific narration presented here is not authentic due to a weak and discredited narrator in its chain.
