Surah Ash-Shams (91) — Ayah 7
وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا ﴿7﴾

7. And by the soul and He Who proportioned it [7],

Man is Born Naturally Good and Monotheistic:
That is, after creating the soul, all those apparent and hidden faculties were placed within it, by which he can perform all the tasks for which he was created. The meaning of ﴿سَوّٰهَا﴾ includes the point that man is not born sinful, as is the belief of the Christians, and for this reason they invented the doctrine of the atonement of Christ, nor is man created as an evildoer, as some misguided sects believe. Rather, righteousness and truthfulness are instilled in human nature. He learns to lie later. He wants to live together with others with a spirit of goodwill; he learns malevolence and causing harm to others later. Monotheism is in his nature; he learns to associate partners (shirk) later. As the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, every child is born upon the nature of Islam, then his parents make him a Jew, a Christian, or a Magian. [بخاري۔ كتاب التفسير]
