يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ نَجَسٌ فَلَا يَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلْمَسْجِدَ ٱلْحَرَامَ بَعْدَ عَامِهِمْ هَـٰذَا ۚ وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ عَيْلَةً فَسَوْفَ يُغْنِيكُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦٓ إِن شَآءَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ ﴿28﴾
O you who believe (in Allâh’s Oneness and in His Messenger Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم)! Verily, the Mushrikûn (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh, and in the Message of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) are Najasun (impure). So let them not come near Al-Masjidal-Harâm (at Makkah) after this year; and if you fear poverty, Allâh will enrich you if He wills, out of His Bounty. Surely, Allâh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا yāayyuhā O you who believe
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna O you who believe
ءَامَنُوٓا۟ āmanū O you who believe
إِنَّمَا innamā Indeed
ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ l-mush'rikūna the polytheists
نَجَسٌۭ najasun (are) unclean
فَلَا falā so let them not come near
يَقْرَبُوا۟ yaqrabū so let them not come near
ٱلْمَسْجِدَ l-masjida Al-Masjid Al-Haraam
ٱلْحَرَامَ l-ḥarāma Al-Masjid Al-Haraam
بَعْدَ baʿda after
عَامِهِمْ ʿāmihim this, their (final) year
هَـٰذَا ۚ hādhā this, their (final) year
وَإِنْ wa-in And if
خِفْتُمْ khif'tum you fear
عَيْلَةًۭ ʿaylatan poverty
فَسَوْفَ fasawfa then soon
يُغْنِيكُمُ yugh'nīkumu Allah will enrich you
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah will enrich you
مِن min from
فَضْلِهِۦٓ faḍlihi His Bounty
إِن in if
شَآءَ ۚ shāa He wills
إِنَّ inna Indeed
ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah

O you who believe! Indeed, the polytheists are impure, so let them not approach the Sacred Mosque after this year. And if you fear poverty [26], Allah will enrich you out of His bounty if He wills. Surely, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

The Fear of an Economic Void Due to the Departure of the Polytheists:

In this verse, the polytheists are called impure. This does not mean that they are inherently impure such that if one touches them, one must wash one's hands. Rather, it means that their beliefs are impure and filthy, their morals are impure, and their intentions are always full of corruption, deceit, and trickery, and their actions are filthy. They are always engaged in enmity against Islam, oppression and violence against Muslims, and hostile activities. According to this verse, Muslims have been given a clear command that now the polytheists cannot even come near the House of Allah. Makkah, which was a sacred place, was also a commercial center, and this trade was mostly in the hands of the polytheists of Makkah. Therefore, the residents of Makkah and its surroundings, especially the new Muslims, feared how their needs would now be fulfilled. There was also a concern that sources of livelihood would be affected. Allah comforted these Muslims, and this concern was remedied in such a way that the Muslims themselves took charge of all fields of the economy, in which Allah bestowed blessing and made the Muslims prosperous. The true extent of this situation can be gauged by the fact that when, at the time of the creation of Pakistan in 1947, the Hindus, who held the reins of the economy, were leaving Pakistan for India, and a great void was created in every field of life, especially in the field of economy, so much so that the commercial markets remained closed for a long time. Eventually, when the Muslims took charge of these markets, Allah soon made them prosperous.
