The Repentance · Medinan · Juz 11 · Page 207

And whenever there comes down a Sûrah (chapter from the Qur’ân), they look at one another (saying): "Does any one see you?" Then they turn away. Allâh has turned their hearts (from the light) because they are a people that understand not.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

127. And whenever a surah is revealed, the hypocrites look at each other, asking (with a gesture), "Is anyone watching you?" [146] Then they turn away. Allah has turned their hearts away (from guidance) because they are a people who do not understand [147].

[146]
After the Revelation (Wahi), the Prophet ﷺ Gathering the Companions in the Mosque to Recite the Revelation:

When a surah would be revealed, sometimes the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would call the Muslims to Masjid Nabawi and recite this surah to them as a sermon. Now, the predicament of the hypocrites was that they had to go to the mosque upon such an announcement, and in order to remove suspicion of hypocrisy from themselves, they had to mark their attendance in such gatherings. However, they could not bear this forced labor for long and wished that after marking their attendance, they could immediately slip away from the Muslims unnoticed, and most of them would do exactly this. So, when these people began to flee from the gathering of guidance and righteousness in this manner, Allah made their hearts just like that.

[147] That is, despite being disgraced once or twice every year, they could not understand how they could be saved from this disgrace and instead attain honor, nor in what lies the well-being of their religion and worldly life.
