سُوْرَةُ المُطَفِّفِيْنَ
Surah Al-Mutaffifin (83) — Ayah 14
كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ ﴿14﴾

Nay! But on their hearts is the Rân (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn.

The Black Spot on the Heart Due to Sinning:
The real issue is not that there is any doubt or uncertainty in Our verses, nor that they lack the power to influence. Rather, the real matter is that by repeatedly committing sins, their hearts have become distorted and rusted. They no longer have the ability to distinguish between truth and falsehood. The explanation of this verse is given in a hadith as follows: Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah ؓ says that the Prophet ﷺ said: When a servant commits a sin, a black spot appears on his heart. Then if he leaves the sin, seeks forgiveness, and repents, his heart is cleansed. But if he commits the sin again, the spot increases until it covers the heart. And this is the rust that Allah Almighty has mentioned in this verse. [ترمذي : ابواب التفسير]
