The Literal Meaning of ﴿تطفيف﴾:
﴿مُطَفِّفِيْنَ﴾ ﴿طفيف﴾ means something insignificant and trivial, and ﴿طفّف﴾ means to give a little less when filling a measuring vessel, or to keep the vessel itself slightly smaller so that the one receiving the grain does not realize that his due is being slightly diminished. In Arabia, it was more common to sell goods by measure rather than by weight, though weighing was also practiced to some extent. In our region, it is more common to sell goods by weight. The idiom "dandi maarna" (to cheat on the scale) is widely used here for giving less by weight. That is why the Urdu translation uses the idiom "dandi maarna." Furthermore, "dandi maarna" is more expressive in the sense that one can give less when selling by cheating on the scale, and one can take a little more when buying by cheating as well. In terms of corrupt intention, giving someone less than their due and taking more than one's due are both equally grave sins, i.e., major sins.
