Surah Al-Infitaar (82) — Ayah 5
عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ وَأَخَّرَتْ ﴿5﴾

5. (On that Day) every soul will know what it has sent ahead and what it left behind [6].
[6] This verse has two meanings: one is that, in this world, what deeds a person performed in the earlier part of his life and what deeds he performed later, and all these matters will be recorded in order in the books of deeds. The second meaning is: what were the deeds that a person performed during his lifetime — this is ﴿ماقدّمت﴾ — and what were the deeds whose reward or punishment continued to be recorded in his book of deeds even after his death. This is "ma akhkharat" , as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever initiates a good practice in Islam, he will have the reward for his own action and the reward of those who act upon it after him, without their reward being diminished in the least. And whoever initiates an evil practice in Islam, he will bear the burden of his own action and the burden of those who act upon it after him, without their burden being diminished in the least. [مسلم، کتاب الزکوٰۃ باب الحث علی الصدقۃ۔۔]
