3. And when the seas are burst forth [4],
[4] ﴿فُجِّرَتْ﴾ and ﴿فجر﴾ mean to tear something apart on a large scale, and ﴿فجر﴾ is called ﴿فجر﴾ because it appears across the entire horizon. The meaning of ﴿فجر﴾ is to tear water, etc., and make it flow or run over a vast area. It is as if the seas will be torn apart and their water will be made to flow over distant regions of the earth. Previously, in Surah At-Takweer, the word سُجّرَتْ was used for the seas, meaning that turmoil will erupt in them and the water will spread far and wide. Then this very water will turn into gases and begin to burn. And Allah knows best what is correct. In any case, these are different states of different times that have been mentioned.
