وَإِذْ يَعِدُكُمُ ٱللَّهُ إِحْدَى ٱلطَّآئِفَتَيْنِ أَنَّهَا لَكُمْ وَتَوَدُّونَ أَنَّ غَيْرَ ذَاتِ ٱلشَّوْكَةِ تَكُونُ لَكُمْ وَيُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن يُحِقَّ ٱلْحَقَّ بِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ وَيَقْطَعَ دَابِرَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ ﴿7﴾
And (remember) when Allâh promised you (Muslims) one of the two parties (of the enemy i.e. either the army or the caravan) that it should be yours; you wished that the one not armed (the caravan) should be yours, but Allâh willed to justify the truth by His Words and to cut off the roots of the disbelievers (i.e. in the battle of Badr).
وَإِذْ wa-idh And when
يَعِدُكُمُ yaʿidukumu promised you
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
إِحْدَى iḥ'dā one
ٱلطَّآئِفَتَيْنِ l-ṭāifatayni (of) the two groups
أَنَّهَا annahā that it (would be)
لَكُمْ lakum for you
وَتَوَدُّونَ watawaddūna and you wished
أَنَّ anna that
غَيْرَ ghayra (one) other than
ذَاتِ dhāti that
ٱلشَّوْكَةِ l-shawkati (of) the armed
تَكُونُ takūnu would be
لَكُمْ lakum for you
وَيُرِيدُ wayurīdu But intended
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
أَن an to
يُحِقَّ yuḥiqqa justify
ٱلْحَقَّ l-ḥaqa the truth
بِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ bikalimātihi by His words
وَيَقْطَعَ wayaqṭaʿa and cut off
دَابِرَ dābira (the) roots
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ l-kāfirīna (of) the disbelievers
