Surah Al-Mursalaat (77) — Ayah 48
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱرْكَعُوا۟ لَا يَرْكَعُونَ ﴿48﴾

And when it is said to them: "Bow down yourself (in prayer)!" They bow not down (offer not their prayers).

48. And when it was said to them, "Bow down (before Allah)," they did not bow down [27].
[27] One meaning of this is that when they were told to submit to Allah’s signs and commands, instead of submitting, they became arrogant. Another meaning is that when they were called to prayer, they refused. It is said that this verse was revealed regarding the tribe of Banu Thaqif. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded them to perform prayer, they said that prayer requires bowing, and they felt ashamed to bow. For such people, there is nothing but destruction on that Day. Such people will wish to prostrate before Allah on the Day of Resurrection, but they will not be able to do so. The tendons of their backs will become stiff, as has already been mentioned in Surah Al-Qalam, verses 42 and 43.
