أَحْيَآءً وَأَمْوَٰتًا ﴿26﴾
For the living and the dead?
أَحْيَآءًۭ aḥyāan (For the) living
وَأَمْوَٰتًۭا wa-amwātan and (the) dead

26. Both the living [16] and the dead?

The Literal Meaning of ﴿كفاتا﴾:

﴿كِفَاتًا﴾: ﴿كَفَتَ﴾ means to gather something and take it into one’s possession, to keep it safe, to collect it; and ﴿كَفِيْت﴾ means a provision container in which food and supplies are kept safe. The meaning is that the life, death, and then resurrection of man are all connected to the earth. Man was created from earth or clay, which is a lifeless thing. Then man ate lifeless things produced from the earth, which became the means for his survival. Then from these lifeless foods, his sperm was formed, in which there were signs of life. Then from this sperm, man was created. After death, man returns to the soil. And no matter how many people die, the earth preserves them within itself. In other words, this very earth holds both the living and does not expel the dead from within itself, but keeps them preserved. Then, when Allah wills, it will bring out these dead people. Exactly as plants sprout and come out from within it.
