سُوْرَةُ الْمَعَارِجِ
Surah Al-Ma'aarij (70) — Ayah 4
تَعْرُجُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِى يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُۥ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ ﴿4﴾

The angels and the Rûh [Jibrîl (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years.

4. To Him the angels and the Spirit ascend in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years [3].

The Different Durations of the Word ﴿يوم﴾:
﴿يوم﴾ means "day," that is, the time from sunset to the next day's sunset. The combined time of night and day, or a duration of 24 hours. And this duration of "yawm" is for us, the inhabitants of the earth. On the moon, this "yawm" according to our calculation is approximately one month. On Mercury, this day is equal to our 88 days. At the North and South Poles, it is approximately one year. When Allah Almighty created the heavens and the earth in six days, then here "day" refers to a long period, which according to our calculation can even be millions of years. In one place in the Quran, the measure of "yawm" is stated as one thousand years. [22: 47]
At this place, there is mention of the punishment coming upon criminal nations in this world. And at this place, the measure of "yawm" is stated as fifty thousand years. As for the matter that Jibreel Amin or other angels or the souls of righteous people ascend to the Owner of the Heights in fifty thousand years, this is beyond our understanding because this matter is purely related to the attributes of Allah. After the completion of which scheme or plan of Allah do the angels and Jibreel Amin ascend to Him in such a duration? Whatever explanation we present will be incomplete. Its correct meaning is known only to Allah. However, from the hadiths, it is known that the duration of the Day of Judgment will be fifty thousand years. This will be the day on which the disbelievers will certainly be punished. This punishment will be from the Owner of the Heights, and no power will be able to save the disbelievers from this punishment.
