تَدْعُوا۟ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ﴿17﴾
Calling (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind on the Day of Resurrection just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] (Tafsir Al-Qurtubî)
تَدْعُوا۟ tadʿū Inviting
مَنْ man (him) who
أَدْبَرَ adbara turned his back
وَتَوَلَّىٰ watawallā and went away

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

17. It will call every one who turned his back (on truth) [11] and turned away.

[11] In verses 17 and 18, mention is made of those two fundamental crimes that make a person deserving of Hell. The details of these crimes have already been discussed in the footnote to verses 33 and 34 of Surah Al-Haqqah. Hell will call such people to itself. And according to one narration, a neck will emerge from Hell which will pick out those deserving of Hell one by one, just as a bird picks up a grain lying on the ground.
