And if the people of the towns had believed and had the Taqwâ (piety), certainly, We should have opened for them blessings from the heaven and the earth, but they belied (the Messengers). So We took them (with punishment) for what they used to earn (polytheism and crimes).
وَلَوْ walaw And if
أَنَّ anna [that]

ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ l-qurā (of) the cities

لَفَتَحْنَا lafataḥnā surely We (would have) opened

كَذَّبُوا۟ kadhabū they denied
فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم fa-akhadhnāhum So We seized them
بِمَا bimā for what

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

96. And if the people of those towns had believed and been mindful of Allah [101], We would have surely opened for them blessings from the heavens and the earth. But they denied, so We seized them for what they used to earn.

The Descent of Blessings Upon an Obedient Society:

In this verse, Allah Almighty has stated such a principle that those with superficial, rationalistic minds cannot comprehend, but both experience and observation bear witness to this reality: in whichever region Allah's commands are followed to whatever extent, Allah's mercy and blessings begin to descend upon that region. In the present era, this can to some extent be observed in Saudi Arabia, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has said that by establishing even one of Allah's prescribed limits, so many blessings and mercies descend as would descend from forty days of rain.
