سُوْرَةُ الْاَعْرَافِ
Surah Al-A'raaf (7) — Ayah 90
وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَوْمِهِۦ لَئِنِ ٱتَّبَعْتُمْ شُعَيْبًا إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا لَّخَـٰسِرُونَ ﴿90﴾

The chiefs of those who disbelieved among his people said (to their people): "If you follow Shu‘aib, be sure then you will be the losers!"

The Notion of Loss in Adopting Truthfulness:
The addressees of this statement by the chiefs could be those people who had believed in Shu‘ayb ؑ. In this case, its meaning would be that if you do not abandon Shu‘ayb, we will make your lives miserable and make it impossible for you to live, so refrain from supporting him. And it could also refer to those who belonged to the group of these deniers themselves. In this case, it would mean that if you adopt the way of speaking the truth in business and maintaining correct weights and measures, as Shu‘ayb says, then you will never profit in your business and commercial dealings, and you will always suffer losses, and eventually your entire business will come to a standstill. And this notion was not exclusive to the people of Madyan; rather, in every era, corrupt people have held the same belief that trade, politics, and other worldly affairs cannot function without lies and dishonesty. Even today, the majority of our traders and politicians are of the same mindset, whereas these very things are the root cause of corruption in the land, and it is through them that people's rights are violated, and ultimately such deceitful people bring down the entire society.
