سُوْرَةُ الطَّلَاقِ
Surah At-Talaaq (65) — Ayah 8
وَكَأَيِّن مِّن قَرْيَةٍ عَتَتْ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهَا وَرُسُلِهِۦ فَحَاسَبْنَـٰهَا حِسَابًا شَدِيدًا وَعَذَّبْنَـٰهَا عَذَابًا نُّكْرًا ﴿8﴾
Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
And many a town (population) revolted against the Command of its Lord and His Messengers; and We called it to a severe account (i.e. torment in this worldly life), and We shall punish it with a horrible torment (in Hell in the Hereafter).

8. And how many a city defied the command of its Lord and His messengers, so We called it to a severe account [23] and punished it with a terrible punishment.
[23] After stating the rulings related to family life and emphasizing at every point to fear Allah, Allah Almighty mentioned those people who showed arrogance and adopted the path of defiance in the face of Allah’s commands. Their greatest crime was that they did not care about Allah’s commands at all. So We gave them the exact punishment for their deeds. We held them strictly accountable and did not forgive anyone, and We involved them in such a calamity from which they could not escape.
