The Hypocrites · Medinan · Juz 28 · Page 555

They (hyprocrites) say: "If we return to Al-Madinah, indeed the more honourable (‘Abdullâh bin Ubai bin Salûl, the chief of hyprocrites at Al-Madinah) will expel therefrom the meaner (i.e. Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم)." But honour, power and glory belong to Allâh, and to His Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), and to the believers, but the hypocrites know not.
يَقُولُونَ yaqūlūna They say

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

They say, "If we return to Madinah, the more honorable will surely expel the more humble from it." Yet all honor belongs to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, but the hypocrites do not know.

What Punishment Did Abdullah bin Ubay Receive for Lying?

The punishment that this hypocrite received for denying his crimes by swearing false oaths was, firstly, that Allah Almighty exposed his hypocrisy and lies through revelation and disgraced him. The second punishment was that his own son, Abdullah, who was a true believer, stood at the gate of Madinah with his sword drawn and blocked his father's way, saying that until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave permission, he could not enter Madinah, because the most honorable is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the most disgraced is you. After a while, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived at the place where the son was blocking his father's way, and out of kindness, he allowed Abdullah bin Ubay to enter Madinah. Only then did the son step aside. At that moment, this hypocrite realized what he did not know before: that all honor belongs to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the believers, and in comparison to them, he is the most disgraced person. When Sayyiduna Umar ؓ sought permission to kill Abdullah bin Ubay, the Prophet ﷺ did not grant permission for his killing, and the only reason was to avoid giving the enemies a chance to rejoice. Otherwise, his crimes were such that he deserved to be killed and the earth to be cleansed of this embodiment of mischief. When such discussions began among the Companions, Abdullah bin Ubay’s son, Sayyiduna Abdullah ؓ, came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, if you intend to kill my father, then command me and I will bring his head to you. If someone else kills him, I fear that my sense of honor may be provoked." [ابن هشام، 12: 290 تا 292]
