۞ أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْا۟ قَوْمًا غَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مَّا هُم مِّنكُمْ وَلَا مِنْهُمْ وَيَحْلِفُونَ عَلَى ٱلْكَذِبِ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿14﴾
Have you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) not seen those (hypocrites) who take as friends a people upon whom is the Wrath of Allâh (i.e. Jews)? They are neither of you (Muslims) nor of them (Jews), and they swear to a lie while they know.
۞ أَلَمْ alam Do not

14. Have you not seen those who befriend a people upon whom [18] Allah is angry? They are neither of you nor of them. And they knowingly swear to falsehoods [19].

The Hypocrites’ Collusion with the Jews:

“From those people” refers to the hypocrites of Madinah, and the nation upon whom wrath was brought refers to the Jews of Madinah. The hypocrites’ real friendship and sympathy were with the Jews, because inwardly the hypocrites were as much enemies of the Muslims as the Jews were. This shared enmity towards Islam bound the two together in a relationship of friendship. Among the two, the hypocrites were in a worse state, as Muslims no longer trusted their verbal claims of faith. Since, due to their claim of Islam, they were obtaining various benefits from the Muslims, they had to swear false oaths to maintain the Muslims’ trust. But their actions belied their claims and oaths, so neither the Muslims trusted them, nor the Jews. Their condition became like that of a washerman’s dog, who belongs neither at home nor at the riverbank.
[19] In front of the Jews, they swear oaths that they are wholeheartedly with them and share in their pains and sorrows, and that they have merely fooled the Muslims. And in front of the Muslims, they swear oaths that they have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and are obedient and submissive to them.
