فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ ﴿86﴾

86. Then if you are not under anyone’s authority [40]—

The Scene of Death and the Helplessness of Man:
﴿غَيْرَ مَدِيْنِيْنَ﴾ One of the meanings of "Deen" is the law of reward and punishment, and according to this law, to give reward and punishment for good and bad deeds. In these few verses, the scene of utter helplessness of both the dying person and his loved ones is presented. On one side is the dying person, for whom saving his life is dearer than anything else. Along with him are his loved ones, who have left no stone unturned in his treatment and wish for his life to be saved. On the other side are Allah or His angels, who come to seize his soul. Then see, who remains dominant and who is subdued? Allah's question to these deniers of the Hereafter is that the threshold or starting point of the Hereafter is death. If you consider yourselves free from the grip of any higher law, then why do you not return the soul of the deceased? When you are defeated at the very first step by Our angels, then how will you be able to save yourselves further ahead?
