34. And gave a little [25], then stopped.
[25] It is understood from the narrations that these two verses were revealed concerning Walid bin Mughirah. Before Abu Jahl, Walid bin Mughirah was the chief of the leaders of Quraysh, and there was no doubt about his intelligence. He had been considerably influenced by the call of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and was close to embracing faith. When one of his polytheist friends came to know of this situation, he said to him: "I take responsibility for the Hereafter that you fear; if you are punished, I will take your punishment upon myself, provided that you give me such and such amount of wealth." Thus, Walid bin Mughirah was deceived by him. Accepting his word, he even paid him an installment of the agreed wealth, but later, for some unknown reason, he withheld giving any more wealth.
