Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

49. And of everything We created pairs [43], so that you may take heed.

Pairs of Everything and the Different Meanings of "Zauj":

The word "zauj" in Arabic comes in three meanings.
(1) Opposite things, such as day and night, sunlight and shade, light and darkness, blackness and whiteness, happiness and sorrow, prosperity and hardship, etc.
(2) For similar things, such as both shoes of a pair are each other's "zauj." In the same way, every era's polytheists are each other's "zauj." Criminals of the same nature are each other's "zauj."
(3) For male and female, for example, the husband is the "zauj" of the wife, and the wife is the "zauj" of the husband. Every male is the "zauj" of a female, and every female is the "zauj" of a male. And in this verse, most likely, this type of "zauj" is meant. Among living beings, everyone has observed that one is the "zauj" of the other. This system is also established in plants. The pollinating winds place the pollen of the male tree onto the female tree, and only then does it bear and ripen fruit. According to modern research, this system is also found in inanimate objects. The positive and negative in electricity, or the positive and negative in a tiny particle in the form of electrons and protons, is now known to man. Magnets also have positive and negative poles. And as for inanimate objects, every single thing is a collection of particles. From this male and female, Allah Almighty has established this system that from the union of both, a third thing comes into existence, in which sometimes some properties of the original male and female are present, and sometimes this third thing is such that its properties are completely different from both the first things, and this is what is called alchemy or chemistry. The extent to which human knowledge has reached is, in any case, limited. Whereas divine revelation is complete knowledge, in which it has been informed that Allah Almighty has created pairs of everything, and by pondering over them, man learns many lessons about the perfect power of Allah and attains His recognition.
