And had they believed in Allâh, and in the Prophet (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) and in what has been revealed to him, never would they have taken them (the disbelievers) as Auliyâ’ (protectors and helpers); but many of them are the Fâsiqûn (rebellious, disobedient to Allâh).
وَلَوْ walaw And if

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

81. If they had believed in Allah, the Prophet, and what was sent down to him, they would not have taken the disbelievers as friends [127], but most of them are defiantly disobedient.

[127] They should have befriended some from among the People of the Book, so that there would at least be some degree of harmony in beliefs, which could serve as a basis for their friendship. But they have become so blinded by enmity towards Islam that, in opposition to the Muslims, they choose the polytheists as friends, and even verbally tell the polytheists that, in terms of religion, you are better than the Muslims.
