And those who believe will say: "Are these the men (hypocrites) who swore their strongest oaths by Allâh that they were with you (Muslims)?" All that they did has been in vain (because of their hypocrisy), and they have become the losers.
وَيَقُولُ wayaqūlu And will say
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
ءَامَنُوٓا۟ āmanū believe
أَهَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ ahāulāi Are these
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
أَقْسَمُوا۟ aqsamū swore

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

53. And the believers will say: "Are these the ones who swore solemn oaths by Allah that they were with you?" Their deeds have become worthless, and they have ended up as losers [95].

The Effect of the Dominance of Islam on the Hypocrites:

When Muslims begin to suspect their hypocrisy due to their secret anti-Islamic activities, they try to reassure the Muslims by swearing oaths in the name of Allah that they are indeed with them, and that their conversations with the Jews are merely formal and out of courtesy. It was the habit of the hypocrites that in every difficult time, they would betray the Muslims, and later would start swearing oaths. And if they did not participate in battle with the Muslims, they would make excuses and swear oaths to present themselves as truthful. Their fate in this world was that ultimately, Muslims were granted victory. When Makkah was conquered, all the tribes of Arabia came to know that now Islam had emerged as the dominant force and disbelief could no longer stand against it. In this way, all the hopes and desires of the hypocrites were dashed. They had already been deemed untrustworthy in front of the Muslims, so they gained nothing except regret and despair. And in the Hereafter, they will be at a loss in the sense that the acts of Islam they performed alongside the Muslims will all be wasted due to their hypocrisy. Because they did not do these deeds for the pleasure of Allah; rather, they did them to gain benefits from the Muslims, and those benefits they have already obtained. As for the betrayal they committed against the Muslims, in return for that, they will be given punishment in the lowest level of Hell.
