The Table · Medinan · Juz 6 · Page 117

And you see those in whose hearts there is a disease (of hypocrisy), they hurry to their friendship, saying: "We fear lest some misfortune of a disaster may befall us." Perhaps Allâh may bring a victory or a decision according to His Will. Then they will become regretful for what they have been keeping as a secret in themselves.
فَتَرَى fatarā And you see

دَآئِرَ ةٌۭ ۚ dāiratun a misfortune
فَعَسَى faʿasā But perhaps
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

52. You will see those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) rushing towards them (the Jews and Christians), saying: "We fear that a misfortune [94] may befall us." But it may be that Allah will soon bring about victory (for the believers) or a command from Himself, and then they will regret what they have been hiding in their hearts [94.1].

The Reason for the Hypocrites’ Secret Collusion with the Jews and Christians:

The hypocrites who maintained heartfelt friendship with the Jews and Christians were outwardly Muslim, but their true sympathies lay with the Jews, Christians, and disbelievers. After the Battle of Uhud, their sympathies increased further. Although Islam had become a force after the Battle of Badr, true dominance was only achieved after the Conquest of Makkah. In this interim period, it could not be said with certainty whether Islam or disbelief would ultimately prevail. Outwardly, both the Jews and Christians were much wealthier than the Muslims; the fertile and lush regions of Arabia were under their control, and the Jews were also engaged in usury, making people dependent on them in this regard as well. In short, the economy of Arabia was actually dominated by the Jews and Christians. In these circumstances, the hypocrites thought that if the Muslims lost, they would be left with nothing. Therefore, they considered it extremely necessary to befriend them, maintain friendly relations, secretly support them in anti-Islamic conspiracies, and make secret agreements with them against the Muslims during times of war. On the other hand, there was also the risk that Islam might prevail. Therefore, they outwardly remained part of the Muslim community and performed prayers. Regarding them, Allah Almighty said that these hypocrites are not truly Muslims, but are in fact Jews and Christians.

The Eyes of the Arab Tribes on the Conquest of Makkah:

In most places, the Noble Quran refers to “al-Fath” as the Conquest of Makkah, meaning that the polytheists of Arabia, the Jews of Madinah, the hypocrites, and the Christians all understood that in Arabia, the dominant power between the Muslims and the Quraysh of Makkah would be the one that controlled Makkah and the House of Allah. The wealth and political leadership of the Quraysh of Makkah was due to their custodianship of the Ka‘bah. In this verse, Allah Almighty addresses the hypocrites, saying that it is quite possible that Allah will soon grant the Muslims the Conquest of Makkah, and even before this conquest, circumstances may arise in which all the secrets of the hypocrites will be exposed, leaving them completely disgraced, regretful, and ashamed. What they concealed in their hearts was not only uncertainty about which side would prevail, but also the belief that conquering Makkah against the opposition of all the Arabs was impossible. This is why they maintained secret collusion with the disbelievers and were never willing to abandon it at any cost.
