قَالَ فَإِنَّهَا مُحَرَّمَةٌ عَلَيْهِمْ ۛ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً ۛ يَتِيهُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ فَلَا تَأْسَ عَلَى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ ﴿26﴾
(Allâh) said: "Therefore it (this holy land) is forbidden to them for forty years; in distraction they will wander through the land. So be not sorrowful over the people who are the Fâsiqûn (rebellious and disobedient to Allâh)."
قَالَ qāla (Allah) said
فَإِنَّهَا fa-innahā Then indeed it
مُحَرَّمَةٌ muḥarramatun (will be) forbidden
عَلَيْهِمْ ۛ ʿalayhim to them
أَرْبَعِينَ arbaʿīna (for) forty
سَنَةًۭ ۛ sanatan years
يَتِيهُونَ yatīhūna they will wander
فِى in
ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ l-arḍi the earth
فَلَا falā So (do) not
تَأْسَ tasa grieve
عَلَى ʿalā over
ٱلْقَوْمِ l-qawmi the people
ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ l-fāsiqīna the defiantly disobedient

Allah said, "Now that land is forbidden [57] to them for forty years. During this period, they will wander aimlessly in the land. So do not grieve over the condition of such rebellious people."

The Promise Delayed by Forty Years as a Remedy:

Allah Almighty said that the punishment for such a cowardly and disobedient people is that the promise of victory and help in Palestine is postponed for forty years. This forty-year delay was, in fact, a remedy for the ailments of this cowardly and faint-hearted people, so that during this period they would wander back and forth in the wilderness, enduring the hardships of life in the desert. During these forty years, the young and cowardly generation of this people would perish, and a new generation would be born and raised in the open air, becoming accustomed to hardship and developing courage. Then, when they are encouraged for Jihad, they will be ready to rise. Therefore, O Musa! You should not feel pity for such people who are being punished as a remedy.
