بَلْ ظَنَنتُمْ أَن لَّن يَنقَلِبَ ٱلرَّسُولُ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِيهِمْ أَبَدًا وَزُيِّنَ ذَٰلِكَ فِى قُلُوبِكُمْ وَظَنَنتُمْ ظَنَّ ٱلسَّوْءِ وَكُنتُمْ قَوْمًۢا بُورًا ﴿12﴾
"Nay, but you thought that the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and the believers would never return to their families, and that was made fair-seeming in your hearts, and you did think an evil thought and you became a useless people going for destruction."
بَلْ bal Nay
ظَنَنتُمْ ẓanantum you thought
أَن an that
لَّن lan (would) never
يَنقَلِبَ yanqaliba return
ٱلرَّسُولُ l-rasūlu the Messenger
وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ wal-mu'minūna and the believers
إِلَىٰٓ ilā to
أَهْلِيهِمْ ahlīhim their families
أَبَدًۭا abadan ever
وَزُيِّنَ wazuyyina that was made fair-seeming
ذَٰلِكَ dhālika that was made fair-seeming
فِى in
قُلُوبِكُمْ qulūbikum your hearts
وَظَنَنتُمْ waẓanantum And you assumed
ظَنَّ ẓanna an assumption
ٱلسَّوْءِ l-sawi evil
وَكُنتُمْ wakuntum and you became
قَوْمًۢا qawman a people
بُورًۭا būran ruined

12. No! You thought that the Messenger and the believers would never return to their families, and that thought was made pleasing in your hearts [14], and you assumed an evil assumption. And you are a people doomed to perish.

The Hypocrites’ Assumption That the Muslims Would Not Return Safely:

The real issue is that you neither have trust in Allah nor in His promises. You merely assumed that this handful of people would not be able to return safely. And not only was this your assumption, but it was also your desire. You felt absolutely no shame in harboring such ill thoughts about Allah, His Messenger, and the believers. Then, your second crime is that you try to cover up your inner malice by making all sorts of false excuses and by pleading with the Messenger of Allah for forgiveness. In the end, this inner malice and falsehood of yours will surely destroy you.
