Surah Al-Ahqaf (46) — Ayah 28

فَلَوْلَا نَصَرَهُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ قُرْبَانًا ءَالِهَةًۢ ۖ بَلْ ضَلُّوا۟ عَنْهُمْ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ إِفْكُهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْتَرُونَ ﴿28﴾
Then why did those whom they had taken for âlihah (gods) besides Allâh, as a way of approach (to Allâh) not help them? Nay, but they vanished completely from them (when there came the torment). And that was their lie, and their inventions which they had been inventing (before their destruction).
فَلَوْلَا falawlā Then why (did) not
نَصَرَهُمُ naṣarahumu help them
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those whom
ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ ittakhadhū they had taken
مِن min besides
دُونِ dūni besides
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah
قُرْبَانًا qur'bānan gods as a way of approach
ءَالِهَةًۢ ۖ ālihatan gods as a way of approach
بَلْ bal Nay
ضَلُّوا۟ ḍallū they were lost
عَنْهُمْ ۚ ʿanhum from them
وَذَٰلِكَ wadhālika And that
إِفْكُهُمْ if'kuhum (was) their falsehood
وَمَا wamā and what
كَانُوا۟ kānū they were
يَفْتَرُونَ yaftarūna inventing

28. Then why did those beings not help them, whom [40] they had taken as gods besides Allah, seeking closeness to Him? Instead, they will vanish from them, and this will be the result of their lies and the false beliefs they had fabricated.

[40] Around Makkah, in earlier times, there were countless settlements that are now destroyed and ruined. They could witness these with their own eyes, and if they wished, they could also take a lesson from them. The greatest and common crime of these nations was that they had made many deities besides Allah, about whom they believed that in times of distress, these would benefit them, intercede for them with Allah, and serve as a means to convey their pleas to Allah and bring them closer to Him. Then, it would have been appropriate that when punishment befell them as a consequence of this very crime, these deities would come to their aid in that calamity. But none came to help them, and the astonishing thing is that when Allah’s punishment came, the devoted worshippers of these deities did not even remember that this was the very time to call upon their gods. What time could be more difficult than this? From this, it becomes clear by itself that all the tales these people had fabricated to establish the awe of their deities were nothing but lies.
