Surah Al-Jaathiya (45) — Ayah 35

ذَٰلِكُم بِأَنَّكُمُ ٱتَّخَذْتُمْ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ هُزُوًا وَغَرَّتْكُمُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ فَٱلْيَوْمَ لَا يُخْرَجُونَ مِنْهَا وَلَا هُمْ يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ ﴿35﴾
This, because you took the revelations of Allâh (this Qur’ân) in mockery, and the life of the world deceived you. So this Day, they shall not be taken out from there (Hell), nor shall they be returned to the worldly life, (so that they repent to Allâh, and beg His Pardon for their sins).
ذَٰلِكُم dhālikum That
بِأَنَّكُمُ bi-annakumu (is) because you
ٱتَّخَذْتُمْ ittakhadhtum took
ءَايَـٰتِ āyāti (the) Verses
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
هُزُوًۭا huzuwan (in) ridicule
وَغَرَّتْكُمُ wagharratkumu and deceived you
ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ l-ḥayatu the life
ٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ l-dun'yā (of) the world
فَٱلْيَوْمَ fal-yawma So this Day
لَا not
يُخْرَجُونَ yukh'rajūna they will be brought forth
مِنْهَا min'hā from it
وَلَا walā and not
هُمْ hum they
يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ yus'taʿtabūna will be asked to appease

35. This is because you used to mock the signs of Allah, and the life of this world deceived you. So today, they will neither be taken out of the Fire, nor will they be asked to appease their Lord [48] by offering excuses.

The Meaning of ﴿استَعْتَبَ﴾:

The meaning of ﴿عَتَبَ﴾ is to rebuke, to show displeasure, and the meaning of 'a'ataba' is also to reproach and to be angry, as well as to address with affection (as this word belongs to the category of words with opposite meanings). And 'a'taba' means to remove displeasure, and 'ist'ataba' means to please someone and to reconcile with someone who is upset. Thus, those who are cast into Hell will not be given any opportunity to apologize, plead, or repent in order to please their Lord.
