49. And (each time) they said, “O magician! Pray to your Lord for us by virtue of the promise He has made to you [48], and surely we will follow the right path.”
[48] The Harm Caused to Sayyiduna Musa by His People:
Several points are understood from this verse. For example: (1) Pharaoh and the people of Pharaoh had fully realized that you were not a magician, but in fact, a Messenger of Allah. And Allah listens to your supplication and accepts it as well. That is why, in times of punishment and hardship, they would turn to you and request you to pray. (2) Their arrogance was such that even at the time of pleading, they would still call you a ‘magician’. Just as all the Prophets have been given this title. And also because they had made you famous as a ‘magician’ in order to keep their people satisfied and to deceive them. These are the very things regarding which Allah Almighty said, “Do not be like those who caused harm to Musa” [33: 69] (3) Just as other Prophets were commanded to bear the words of the disbelievers with patience and forbearance, similarly, Musaؑ was also given the same command. And since these successive punishments were warnings from Allah, Sayyiduna Musaؑ would also bear this insult. Then, under Allah’s command, he would pray for the removal of their punishment.
