وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَٰهِيمُ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِۦٓ إِنَّنِى بَرَآءٌ مِّمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ ﴿26﴾
And (remember) when Ibrâhîm (Abraham) said to his father and his people: "Verily, I am innocent of what you worship,
وَإِذْ wa-idh And when
قَالَ qāla Ibrahim Said
إِبْرَٰهِيمُ ib'rāhīmu Ibrahim Said
لِأَبِيهِ li-abīhi to his father
وَقَوْمِهِۦٓ waqawmihi and his people

بَرَآءٌۭ barāon disassociated
مِّمَّا mimmā from what
تَعْبُدُونَ taʿbudūna you worship

26. And (remember) when Abraham said to his father and his people, "I am completely free from what you worship [24],"

Two Aspects of Sayyiduna Ibrahimؑ and the Imitation of Forefathers:
The mention of Sayyiduna Ibrahimؑ comes here in this very context: the disbelievers of Makkah considered Sayyiduna Ibrahimؑ their leader and prophet. Therefore, they are being made to understand that if you truly wish to follow your ancestors, then follow this leader of yours who was extremely averse to worshipping anyone besides Allah. Why do you follow those ancestors who themselves abandoned the imitation of Sayyiduna Ibrahimؑ and set out on paths of misguidance? In other words, following a prophet is correct, but in the terminology of the Shariah, this is not called imitation (taqlid), but rather following the Messenger (ittiba' al-rasul).
