سُوْرَةُ فُصِّلَتۡ

Surah Fussilat (41) — Ayah 24

فَإِن يَصْبِرُوا۟ فَٱلنَّارُ مَثْوًى لَّهُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَسْتَعْتِبُوا۟ فَمَا هُم مِّنَ ٱلْمُعْتَبِينَ ﴿24﴾
Then, if they bear the torment patiently, then the Fire is the home for them, and if they seek to please Allâh, yet they are not of those who will ever be allowed to please Allâh.
فَإِن fa-in Then if
يَصْبِرُوا۟ yaṣbirū they endure
فَٱلنَّارُ fal-nāru the Fire
مَثْوًۭى mathwan (is) an abode
لَّهُمْ ۖ lahum for them
وَإِن wa-in and if
يَسْتَعْتِبُوا۟ yastaʿtibū they ask for favor
فَمَا famā then not
هُم hum they
مِّنَ mina (will be) of
ٱلْمُعْتَبِينَ l-muʿ'tabīna those who receive favor

24. Now, whether they are patient [29] (or not), the Fire will be their abode, and if they seek to repent [30], their repentance will not be accepted.

[29] That is, in this world, the fruit of patience is always sweet. But there, even patience will be of no benefit. Whether they are patient or not, they will not be able to escape the punishment.

Different Meanings of ﴿استعتب﴾:

The root of ﴿يَسْتَعْتِبُوْا﴾ is 'atb', and 'atb' or 'itab' means to express displeasure in a gentle manner in order to remove anger; that is, such gentle reproach and blame whose ultimate purpose is to please and reconcile. The meaning of ﴿إسْتَعْتَبَ﴾ is to reconcile with someone who is upset, and i'tab means to remove the cause of displeasure. In this regard, this phrase can have several meanings. One is the same as is apparent from the translation. The second is that if they wish to return to the world again, their wish will not be granted. And the third is that if they try to appease or plead, as sometimes works in this world, even their flattery or pleading will have no effect.
