Surah Ghafir (40) — Ayah 85

فَلَمْ يَكُ يَنفَعُهُمْ إِيمَـٰنُهُمْ لَمَّا رَأَوْا۟ بَأْسَنَا ۖ سُنَّتَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِى قَدْ خَلَتْ فِى عِبَادِهِۦ ۖ وَخَسِرَ هُنَالِكَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ ﴿85﴾
Then their Faith (in Islâmic Monotheism) could not avail them when they saw Our punishment. (Like) this has been the way of Allâh in dealing with His slaves. And there the disbelievers lost utterly (when Our Torment covered them).
فَلَمْ falam But did not
يَكُ yaku But did not
يَنفَعُهُمْ yanfaʿuhum benefit them
إِيمَـٰنُهُمْ īmānuhum their faith
لَمَّا lammā when
رَأَوْا۟ ra-aw they saw
بَأْسَنَا ۖ basanā Our punishment
سُنَّتَ sunnata (Such is the) Way
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
ٱلَّتِى allatī which
قَدْ qad (has) indeed
خَلَتْ khalat preceded
فِى among
عِبَادِهِۦ ۖ ʿibādihi His slaves
وَخَسِرَ wakhasira And are lost
هُنَالِكَ hunālika there
ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ l-kāfirūna the disbelievers
