Surah Ghafir (40) — Ayah 77

فَٱصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّ ۚ فَإِمَّا نُرِيَنَّكَ بَعْضَ ٱلَّذِى نَعِدُهُمْ أَوْ نَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَ فَإِلَيْنَا يُرْجَعُونَ ﴿77﴾
So be patient (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم); verily, the Promise of Allâh is true and whether We show you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم in this world) some part of what We have promised them, or We cause you to die then still it is to Us they all shall be returned.
فَٱصْبِرْ fa-iṣ'bir So be patient
إِنَّ inna indeed
وَعْدَ waʿda (the) Promise
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
حَقٌّۭ ۚ ḥaqqun (is) true
فَإِمَّا fa-immā And whether
نُرِيَنَّكَ nuriyannaka We show you
بَعْضَ baʿḍa some
ٱلَّذِى alladhī (of) what
نَعِدُهُمْ naʿiduhum We have promised them
أَوْ aw or
نَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَ natawaffayannaka We cause you to die
فَإِلَيْنَا fa-ilaynā then to Us
يُرْجَعُونَ yur'jaʿūna they will be returned

77. So (O Prophet!) be patient. Surely, the promise of Allah is true. Whether We show you (in your lifetime) some of what We have promised them, or cause you to die (before that), to Us they will (all) be returned [98].

Three Forms of Punishment for the Disbelievers of Makkah:

That is, these disbelievers of Makkah who are persecuting you and want to hinder the path of Islam, the promise of Allah’s punishment upon them is certain to be fulfilled. And there are three forms of this. The first is that the punishment comes upon them during your lifetime, as happened in the Battle of Badr, the Battle of Ahzab, and at the time of the Conquest of Makkah, when the disbelievers were disgraced. The second form is that a part of this punishment comes upon them after your life. By this is meant those battles which Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq ؓ and Sayyiduna Umar ؓ fought against the apostates, heretics, and disbelievers, and Islam was fully established, and the disbelievers and disbelief were disgraced. And the third and final form is that ultimately, after death, they have to return to Us. At that time, We will take away all their strength and give them the full recompense for their crimes.
