Surah Ghafir (40) — Ayah 47

وَإِذْ يَتَحَآجُّونَ فِى ٱلنَّارِ فَيَقُولُ ٱلضُّعَفَـٰٓؤُا۟ لِلَّذِينَ ٱسْتَكْبَرُوٓا۟ إِنَّا كُنَّا لَكُمْ تَبَعًا فَهَلْ أَنتُم مُّغْنُونَ عَنَّا نَصِيبًا مِّنَ ٱلنَّارِ ﴿47﴾
And, when they will dispute in the Fire, the weak will say to those who were arrogant: "Verily, we followed you: can you then take from us some portion of the Fire?"
وَإِذْ wa-idh And when
يَتَحَآجُّونَ yataḥājjūna they will dispute
فِى in
ٱلنَّارِ l-nāri the Fire
فَيَقُولُ fayaqūlu then will say
ٱلضُّعَفَـٰٓؤُا۟ l-ḍuʿafāu the weak
لِلَّذِينَ lilladhīna to those who
ٱسْتَكْبَرُوٓا۟ is'takbarū were arrogant
إِنَّا innā Indeed, we
كُنَّا kunnā [we] were
لَكُمْ lakum for you
تَبَعًۭا tabaʿan followers
فَهَلْ fahal so can
أَنتُم antum you
مُّغْنُونَ mugh'nūna avert
عَنَّا ʿannā from us
نَصِيبًۭا naṣīban a portion
مِّنَ mina of
ٱلنَّارِ l-nāri the Fire

47. And when they will dispute with one another in the Fire, the weak will say to those who were arrogant [61]: "We were your followers (in the world), so can you avail us anything against a portion of the Fire's punishment?"

The Dialogue Between the Obedient and the Obeyed:

By "those who considered themselves great" is meant every person who has their own sphere of influence and whose word is accepted within that circle. These could be village chiefs, rulers, government courtiers and officials, political leaders, as well as religious scholars and revered spiritual leaders. When such prominent individuals also reach Hell, their followers will say to them that in the world, we used to obey you. Now, for the punishment we are suffering, take at least some share upon yourselves and lighten our burden. And they will not say this because those leaders can actually lighten their burden. By then, they will have fully understood that in this helplessness, both parties are alike. Rather, they will say this to humiliate them and also to somewhat ease the burning within themselves and to vent the blisters of their hearts.
