Surah An-Nisaa (4) — Ayah 9

وَلْيَخْشَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَوْ تَرَكُوا۟ مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّةً ضِعَـٰفًا خَافُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ فَلْيَتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلْيَقُولُوا۟ قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا ﴿9﴾
And let those (executors and guardians) have the same fear in their minds as they would have for their own, if they had left weak offspring behind. So let them fear Allâh and speak right words.
وَلْيَخْشَ walyakhsha And let fear
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
لَوْ law if
تَرَكُوا۟ tarakū they left
مِنْ min from
خَلْفِهِمْ khalfihim behind
ذُرِّيَّةًۭ dhurriyyatan offspring
ضِعَـٰفًا ḍiʿāfan weak
خَافُوا۟ khāfū (and) they would have feared
عَلَيْهِمْ ʿalayhim about them
فَلْيَتَّقُوا۟ falyattaqū So let them fear
ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah
وَلْيَقُولُوا۟ walyaqūlū and let them speak
قَوْلًۭا qawlan words
سَدِيدًا sadīdan appropriate

9. People should fear that if they themselves were to leave behind weak children, how anxious they would be for them. So let them fear Allah and speak words that are appropriate and straightforward.

[15] That is, if you were to die leaving behind young children, you would certainly be concerned that after you, these children should be treated well. In the same way, those orphans who are under your care at this time, treat them likewise out of fear of Allah. And do not say anything that would break the hearts of the orphans. Whatever you say should be for their good. The way orphans and widows were treated in that era is clearly illustrated by the following hadith:

The Share of Wife and Children in Inheritance:

Sayyiduna Jabir ؓ says, "The wife of Sa'd bin Rabi' ؓ came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ along with her two daughters and said: 'These are the daughters of Sa'd bin Rabi' ؓ. Their father was martyred in the Battle of Uhud. Their uncle (Sa'd bin Rabi's brother) has taken possession of all of Sa'd's estate and has left nothing for them. And without wealth, they cannot get married.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Allah Himself will decide in this matter.' Then, when the verses of inheritance were revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Sa'd's brother and said: 'Give two-thirds of Sa'd's estate to his daughters, and one-eighth to their mother. Whatever remains (i.e., only 5 out of 24 shares) is yours.'" [ترمذی، ابواب الفرائض]
