Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties about the hypocrites? Allâh has cast them back (to disbelief) because of what they have earned. Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(You believers!) What is the matter with you that you have become two groups concerning the hypocrites [121], while Allah has overturned them because of what they earned [122]? Do you wish to guide those whom Allah has let go astray? And whomever Allah lets go astray, you will never find a way for him.

[121]
Two Groups Regarding the Hypocrites:

The reason for the revelation of this verse becomes clear from the following hadith: Zayd bin Thabit ؓ says that when the Prophet ﷺ set out towards Uhud, some people (hypocrites) left him and returned to Madinah. Regarding those who returned, the Companions were divided into two groups. One said that we will fight them (as well), and the other said that we will not fight them. At that time, this verse was revealed.

[122] That is, these hypocrites, by returning, have provided proof of their hypocrisy. Now, if you wish that we should not fight them, perhaps they may come to the right path, then this matter is not in your control. This verse makes it clear that such hypocrites are deserving of death because, in reality, their intention is to make you like themselves.
