There is certainly among you he who would linger behind (from fighting in Allâh’s Cause). If a misfortune befalls you, he says, "Indeed Allâh has favoured me in that I was not present among them."

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

72. And indeed, among you is he who lags behind; then if a calamity befalls you, he says, "Allah has favored me, since I was not present with them." [101]

[101] This address is for the hypocrites, and their conduct during war is mentioned. That is, among them are some people who deliberately and with various excuses delay going out for jihad and try to stay behind. Then, if the Muslims suffer any hardship during this journey of jihad, they become very happy and say that thanks be to Allah that I stayed behind, otherwise I too would have had to endure the same suffering that the other Muslims faced.
