The Women · Medinan · Juz 6 · Page 103

Because of their breaking the covenant, and of their rejecting the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh, and of their killing the Prophets unjustly, and of their saying: "Our hearts are wrapped (with coverings, i.e. we do not understand what the Messengers say)" - nay, Allâh has set a seal upon their hearts because of their disbelief, so they believe not but a little.
فَبِمَا fabimā Then because of
نَقْضِهِم naqḍihim their breaking

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

155. Then, because they broke their covenant [205], rejected the signs of Allah, killed the prophets without right, and said, "Our hearts are wrapped [206],"—rather, Allah has set a seal upon their hearts due to their disbelief, so they do not believe except for a few.

The Disobedience of the People of Musa:

In these verses, it is being stated that when the tablets of the Torah were revealed to Musa ؑ, then what kind of faith did you have in them? In response, you are demanding a similar scripture revealed from the sky from this Prophet. When you took the covenant to act upon those tablets of the Torah, We raised the mountain over you; otherwise, you were such rebellious people that you were never ready to abide by those commands. Even after that, you violated every single command. You were commanded that after the conquest of the city of Jericho, you should enter the city gate prostrating and with humility, but you entered arrogantly on your backsides and, with a materialistic mindset, kept shouting "wheat, wheat." Contrary to Our command, you also hunted fish deceitfully on the Sabbath. In the same way, you denied many signs of Allah. You broke the firm covenants you had made, and above all, you committed the great injustice of killing the Prophets unjustly instead of obeying them. Is this the way to have faith in the Torah?

Hearts Being Enveloped in a Veil:

Then, when any word of guidance is conveyed to them, they say that our hearts are so protected that no matter or belief can enter or affect our beliefs. Whereas the real truth is that, due to these very acts of disobedience and breaking of covenants, misfortune has so overwhelmed their hearts that now any word of guidance proves ineffective upon them. And these people have become so misguided that they even present this misfortune of theirs as if it were a virtue.
