سُوْرَةُ الزُّمَرِ

Surah Az-Zumar (39) — Ayah 15

فَٱعْبُدُوا۟ مَا شِئْتُم مِّن دُونِهِۦ ۗ قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ ٱلَّذِينَ خَسِرُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَأَهْلِيهِمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ أَلَا ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْخُسْرَانُ ٱلْمُبِينُ ﴿15﴾
So worship what you like besides Him. Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "The losers are those who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Verily, that will be a manifest loss!"
فَٱعْبُدُوا۟ fa-uʿ'budū So worship
مَا what
شِئْتُم shi'tum you will
مِّن min besides Him
دُونِهِۦ ۗ dūnihi besides Him
قُلْ qul Say
إِنَّ inna Indeed
ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ l-khāsirīna the losers
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (are) those who
خَسِرُوٓا۟ khasirū (will) lose
أَنفُسَهُمْ anfusahum themselves
وَأَهْلِيهِمْ wa-ahlīhim and their families
يَوْمَ yawma (on the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ l-qiyāmati (of) the Resurrection
أَلَا alā Unquestionably
ذَٰلِكَ dhālika that
هُوَ huwa it
ٱلْخُسْرَانُ l-khus'rānu (is) the loss
ٱلْمُبِينُ l-mubīnu the clear

Worship what you will besides Him. Say, "Indeed, the real losers are those who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Behold! That is the clear loss [24]."

Different Aspects of Loss Due to Shirk:

This clear loss is in the sense that even if the polytheists have performed some good deeds, they will be ruined because of shirk. Now, only their sins will remain. Secondly, they will also bear a share of the sins of their children proportionally. Thirdly, in this world, such a loss can be compensated in a way that later on, some profit may occur. On the Day of Judgment, even this possibility will not exist, as if loss from every direction will surround them.
