Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

22. Gather together those who did wrong, their kinds [13], and all that they used to worship [14] besides Allah.

All Three Meanings of "Zauj" Are Intended Together:

The word "azwaj" is used in three meanings, and at this place, it conveys all three meanings. One meaning is that the husband is the "zauj" of the wife and the wife is the "zauj" of the husband. In this sense, the meaning will be that the angels will be commanded to gather the wrongdoers and their wives who were their partners in rebellion. The second meaning of "zauj" is its counterpart, like one shoe is the "zauj" of the other. In this sense, the meaning will be to gather all the types of wrongdoers together. And the third meaning of "zauj" is its opposite, like night is the "zauj" of day and day is the "zauj" of night, or darkness is the "zauj" of light and light is the "zauj" of darkness. In this sense, the meaning will be: gather and bring before Us all the deities and their worshippers.

The Three Types of False Deities:

There are two major types of deities besides Allah. One is those without intellect, which includes idols, stars, trees and stones, and animals, such as cows, oxen, and snakes, etc. The second is those with intellect, such as prophets, angels, saints, and elders. Then, among humans and jinn, there are some deities who themselves desired that they be obeyed in opposition to Allah, or that their divinity and divine powers be acknowledged. Among all these, only the angels, prophets, and those elders who themselves kept forbidding shirk will not enter Hell. All the remaining deities will be gathered and thrown into Hell, and the reason for this has already been mentioned in several places.
