سُوْرَةُ يٰسٓ

Surah Yaseen (36) — Ayah 18

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا تَطَيَّرْنَا بِكُمْ ۖ لَئِن لَّمْ تَنتَهُوا۟ لَنَرْجُمَنَّكُمْ وَلَيَمَسَّنَّكُم مِّنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ﴿18﴾
They (people) said: "For us, we see an evil omen from you: if you cease not, we will surely stone you, and a painful torment will touch you from us."
قَالُوٓا۟ qālū They said
إِنَّا innā Indeed, we
تَطَيَّرْنَا taṭayyarnā [we] see an evil omen
بِكُمْ ۖ bikum from you
لَئِن la-in If
لَّمْ lam not
تَنتَهُوا۟ tantahū you desist
لَنَرْجُمَنَّكُمْ lanarjumannakum surely, we will stone you
وَلَيَمَسَّنَّكُم walayamassannakum and surely will touch you
مِّنَّا minnā from us
عَذَابٌ ʿadhābun a punishment
أَلِيمٌۭ alīmun painful

18. They said, "We consider you a bad omen [18]. If you do not stop, we will surely stone you, and a painful punishment will befall you at our hands [19]."

What Calamity Befalls the Disbelievers Upon the Call of the Prophets?

In order to shake the deniers of the truth, some minor punishments or hardships are sent down upon them from Allah Almighty as a warning. And even if no such punishment comes, one thing is certain to occur. When a prophet gives the call, some respond positively to his invitation while others become adamant in their opposition. In this way, two groups are formed who become opposed to each other. If a person is a believer, his relatives may be disbelievers. For the deniers of the truth, this becomes a separate calamity. In any case, whether it is in the form of punishment or such division, the deniers of the truth place the blame on the messengers and say that ever since you have come, we have been afflicted with this calamity and this is the result of your misfortune. Otherwise, previously everyone was living together in quite a comfortable life.

The Threat of the Disbelieving Nation:

These people only gave such a threat to their messengers, whereas the disbelievers of Makkah made several attempts and conspiracies, both individually and collectively, to kill you ﷺ.
