Surah Aal-i-Imraan (3) — Ayah 77

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ ٱللَّهِ وَأَيْمَـٰنِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَا خَلَـٰقَ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَلَا يُكَلِّمُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَا يَنظُرُ إِلَيْهِمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ وَلَا يُزَكِّيهِمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ﴿77﴾
Verily, those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allâh’s Covenant and their oaths, they shall have no portion in the Hereafter (Paradise). Neither will Allâh speak to them, nor look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and they shall have a painful torment.
إِنَّ inna Indeed

قَلِيلًا qalīlan little
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ulāika those
لَا no
خَلَـٰقَ khalāqa share
لَهُمْ lahum for them
فِى in
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ l-ākhirati the Hereafter
وَلَا walā and not
يُكَلِّمُهُمُ yukallimuhumu will speak to them
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
وَلَا walā and not
يَنظُرُ yanẓuru look
إِلَيْهِمْ ilayhim at them
يَوْمَ yawma (on the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ l-qiyāmati (of) the Resurrection
وَلَا walā and not
يُزَكِّيهِمْ yuzakkīhim purify them
وَلَهُمْ walahum and for them
عَذَابٌ ʿadhābun (is) a punishment
أَلِيمٌۭ alīmun painful

77. But those who exchange Allah’s covenant and their oaths for a small price—such people will have no share in the Hereafter. On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will neither speak to them, nor look at them, nor purify them, and for them is a painful punishment [67].

[67] There are many possible ways of gaining a small benefit in exchange for Allah’s covenant and oaths; two such cases are mentioned in Bukhari. We present both cases here exactly in the words of the hadith.

Acquiring Wealth Through False Oaths:

1. Ash’ath bin Qais says that this verse was revealed concerning me. I had a well in the land of my cousin. The Prophet ﷺ said to me, “Bring your witnesses, otherwise he should take an oath.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! He will surely take an oath.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever, with the intention of unjustly seizing the wealth of a Muslim, swears a false oath, then when he meets Allah, Allah will be angry with him.” [بخاري، كتاب التفسير]

2. It is narrated from Abdullah bin Abi Awfa that a man placed his goods in the market and, in order to deceive a Muslim, swore a false oath saying, “I used to get such-and-such price for this merchandise.” (Whereas this was not true.) Then Allah revealed this verse. [بخاري، كتاب التفسير] Other cases, such as legal sophistry, altering the Book of Allah, giving wrong verdicts through incorrect interpretation and receiving wealth in return, borrowing something and then denying it and swearing an oath, in short, all forms of dishonesty—this verse applies to all of them. It should be clear that when the Noble Quran or hadiths use such expressions regarding a crime as: “On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will not speak to him,” or “will not look at him,” or “Allah will be angry with him,” or “will not purify them,” then such sins are certainly major sins. Yet, despite committing such crimes, these people think that on the Day of Resurrection, they will be Allah’s close servants, that Allah’s special attention will be upon them, and that whatever little impurity of sin has touched them will be washed away for the sake of their pious predecessors. Whereas, in reality, their case will be exactly the opposite.
