فَمَنْ حَآجَّكَ فِيهِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا جَآءَكَ مِنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ فَقُلْ تَعَالَوْا۟ نَدْعُ أَبْنَآءَنَا وَأَبْنَآءَكُمْ وَنِسَآءَنَا وَنِسَآءَكُمْ وَأَنفُسَنَا وَأَنفُسَكُمْ ثُمَّ نَبْتَهِلْ فَنَجْعَل لَّعْنَتَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ ﴿61﴾
Then whoever disputes with you concerning him [‘Îsâ (Jesus)] after (all this) knowledge that has come to you [i.e. ‘Îsâ (Jesus) being a slave of Allâh, and having no share in Divinity], say: (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves - then we pray and invoke (sincerely) the Curse of Allâh upon those who lie."
فَمَنْ faman Then whoever
حَآجَّكَ ḥājjaka argues (with) you
فِيهِ fīhi concerning it
مِنۢ min from
بَعْدِ baʿdi after
مَا what
جَآءَكَ jāaka came to you
مِنَ mina of
ٱلْعِلْمِ l-ʿil'mi the knowledge
فَقُلْ faqul then say
تَعَالَوْا۟ taʿālaw Come
نَدْعُ nadʿu let us call
أَبْنَآءَنَا abnāanā our sons
وَأَبْنَآءَكُمْ wa-abnāakum and your sons
وَنِسَآءَنَا wanisāanā and our women
وَنِسَآءَكُمْ wanisāakum and your women
وَأَنفُسَنَا wa-anfusanā and ourselves
وَأَنفُسَكُمْ wa-anfusakum and yourselves
ثُمَّ thumma then
نَبْتَهِلْ nabtahil let us pray humbly
فَنَجْعَل fanajʿal and [we] invoke
لَّعْنَتَ laʿnata the curse
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
عَلَى ʿalā on
ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ l-kādhibīna the liars

61. Then if anyone disputes with you about this after knowledge (revelation) has come to you, say: "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves, then let us pray earnestly and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars [56]."

The People of Najran Accepting Jizyah and Avoiding Mubahalah:

In this verse, the procedure of mubahalah is described. When this verse was revealed and you recited it to them, they said, "Give us some time to think and consult." Then, when their consultative assembly was held, a wise old man said, "O group of Christians! You know that Allah has promised to send a prophet from among the descendants of Isma'il. It is possible that this is that very prophet. The things he has said are clear and decisive. If he is indeed that prophet and you engage in mubahalah, then neither you nor your descendants will fare well. It is better that we make peace with him and return to our homeland." Thus, the next day they came and informed you of their decision and requested peace, agreeing to pay jizyah. Imam Bukhari has narrated this incident briefly in these words.

Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah, the Trustworthy of the Ummah:

Hazrat Hudhaifahؓ says that Aqib and Sayyid from Najran came to you. These people wanted to engage in mubahalah with you. One of them said to the other, "If he is a prophet and we engage in mubahalah, then neither we nor our children will fare well." Then they said to youﷺ, "Whatever jizyah you demand, we will pay. Please send with us a trustworthy man, one who is truly trustworthy." Hearing this, your companions began to wait (to see whom you would name). So youﷺ said, "Ubaidah bin Jarrah! Stand up!" When he stood up, youﷺ said, "The trustworthy one of this ummah is this person."
