يَوْمَ تَجِدُ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَّا عَمِلَتْ مِنْ خَيْرٍ مُّحْضَرًا وَمَا عَمِلَتْ مِن سُوٓءٍ تَوَدُّ لَوْ أَنَّ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَهُۥٓ أَمَدًۢا بَعِيدًا ۗ وَيُحَذِّرُكُمُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسَهُۥ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ رَءُوفٌۢ بِٱلْعِبَادِ ﴿30﴾
On the Day when every person will be confronted with all the good he has done, and all the evil he has done, he will wish that there were a great distance between him and his evil. And Allâh warns you against Himself (His punishment) and Allâh is full of kindness to (His) slaves.
يَوْمَ yawma (On the) day
تَجِدُ tajidu will find
كُلُّ kullu every
نَفْسٍۢ nafsin soul
مَّا what
عَمِلَتْ ʿamilat it did
مِنْ min of
خَيْرٍۢ khayrin good
مُّحْضَرًۭا muḥ'ḍaran presented
وَمَا wamā and what
عَمِلَتْ ʿamilat it did
مِن min of
سُوٓءٍۢ sūin evil
تَوَدُّ tawaddu it will wish
لَوْ law [if]
أَنَّ anna that
بَيْنَهَا baynahā between itself
وَبَيْنَهُۥٓ wabaynahu and between it (evil)
أَمَدًۢا amadan (was) a distance
بَعِيدًۭا ۗ baʿīdan great
وَيُحَذِّرُكُمُ wayuḥadhirukumu And warns you
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
نَفْسَهُۥ ۗ nafsahu (against) Himself
وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu and Allah
رَءُوفٌۢ raūfun (is) Most Kind
بِٱلْعِبَادِ bil-ʿibādi to (His) [the] slaves

30. The Day will come when every soul will find whatever good it has done present before it, and (likewise) whatever evil it has done. It will wish that there were a great distance [32] between itself and its evil deeds. And Allah warns you about Himself, and Allah is Most Compassionate to His servants.

Abstaining from Evil Deeds is More Important than Doing Good Deeds:

In this verse, Allah Almighty initially mentioned a righteous person and an evil-doer. Later, only the wish of the evil-doer is mentioned. The reason for this is that being saved from the hardships of the Day of Judgment and the torment of Hell is the real success, and entry into Paradise is the grace and bounty of Allah, which He bestows upon whomever He wills. That is why the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whatever I forbid you from, abstain from it, and whatever I command you to do, do as much of it as you are able." Tafsir of the verse: ﴿فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ﴾ That is, when He mentioned evil deeds, He did not say to avoid them as much as possible, but rather said to abstain from them completely. And when He mentioned good deeds, He said to do as much of them as you are able. Now, consider from another perspective: abstaining from evil deeds is much more difficult than performing good deeds. That is why, in the Book and the Sunnah, there is much more emphasis on abstaining from evil deeds than on performing good deeds. Later, it is again stated:
﴿ وَيُحَذِّرُكُمُ اللّٰهُ نَفْسَهٗ﴾
Then afterwards it is stated:
﴿ وَاللّٰهُ رَءُوْفٌۢ بِالْعِبَادِ﴾
It is as if Allah Almighty's warning His servants about a bad end is itself a great proof of His compassion upon His servants.
