(And remember) when Allâh took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) to make it (the news of the coming of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم and the religious knowledge) known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it, but they threw it away behind their backs, and purchased with it some miserable gain! And indeed worst is that which they bought.
وَإِذْ wa-idh And when
أَخَذَ akhadha took

فَنَبَذُوهُ fanabadhūhu Then they threw it
وَرَآءَ warāa behind

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

And when Allah took a firm covenant from those who were given the Book, that they must make it clear to the people and not conceal it [187], but they cast it behind their backs and sold it for a small price. How evil is what they have purchased!

The Forbidden Consumption and Covenant-Breaking of the Jews:

The Jews were never given the covenant that they should only consider that prophet to be true and believe in him who was given the miracle of a fiery sacrifice. But they fabricated this slander against Allah on their own, so that they might have a reasonable excuse for not believing in the Messenger of Allah, and in every single clause of the covenant that was actually taken from them, they broke that covenant and indulged in covenant-breaking to their heart’s content. The covenant taken from them was that they would strictly act upon the Torah, would widely propagate it, and would not conceal anything from it. But what the Jews did was that they violated countless commands of it, the details of which have already passed. They continued to conceal many of its verses, for example, such verses in which the glad tidings of your coming were given, or the verses related to stoning. Then they committed both literal and interpretive distortion, such as fabricating the issue of «لَيْسَ عَلَيْنَا فِي الْاُمِّيّٖنَ سَبِيْلٌ» for the sake of amassing the wealth of others, and they would also take usury from non-Jews, and saw no objection in devouring their wealth by any unlawful means. Or they would issue false verdicts and collect money.
