Surah Aal-i-Imraan (3) — Ayah 180

وَلَا يَحْسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَبْخَلُونَ بِمَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ هُوَ خَيْرًا لَّهُم ۖ بَلْ هُوَ شَرٌّ لَّهُمْ ۖ سَيُطَوَّقُونَ مَا بَخِلُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ وَلِلَّهِ مِيرَٰثُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ ﴿180﴾
And let not those who covetously withhold of that which Allâh has bestowed on them of His Bounty (Wealth) think that it is good for them (and so they do not pay the obligatory Zakât ). Nay, it will be worse for them; the things which they covetously withheld shall be tied to their necks like a collar on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allâh belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth; and Allâh is Well-Acquainted with all that you do.
وَلَا walā And (let) not
يَحْسَبَنَّ yaḥsabanna think
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
يَبْخَلُونَ yabkhalūna withhold
بِمَآ bimā of what
ءَاتَىٰهُمُ ātāhumu (has) given them
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
مِن min of
فَضْلِهِۦ faḍlihi His Bounty
هُوَ huwa (that) it
خَيْرًۭا khayran (is) good
لَّهُم ۖ lahum for them
بَلْ bal Nay
هُوَ huwa it
شَرٌّۭ sharrun (is) bad
لَّهُمْ ۖ lahum for them
سَيُطَوَّقُونَ sayuṭawwaqūna Their necks will be encircled
مَا (with) what
بَخِلُوا۟ bakhilū they withheld
بِهِۦ bihi [with it]
يَوْمَ yawma (on the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ l-qiyāmati (of) [the] Resurrection
وَلِلَّهِ walillahi And for Allah
مِيرَٰثُ mīrāthu (is the) heritage
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti (of) the heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ wal-arḍi and the earth
وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah
بِمَا bimā with what
تَعْمَلُونَ taʿmalūna you do
خَبِيرٌۭ khabīrun (is) All-Aware

180. And let not those who are stingy with what Allah has given them of His bounty think that it is good for them; rather, it is bad for them. That with which they were stingy will be hung around their necks [178] on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the inheritance [179] of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

The Warning of Sin for Not Giving Zakat:

In verse 177, it was stated that abundance of blessings in this world is not proof that Allah is pleased with someone. Wealth and riches can only be called a blessing of Allah when the rights of wealth are fulfilled from it, and if one acts with miserliness, then this very wealth becomes a cause of punishment. Thus, it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairahؓ that whoever Allah grants wealth, and then he does not pay zakat from it, on the Day of Judgment his wealth will take the form of a bald snake with two black spots over its eyes. That snake will become a collar around his neck and will seize both his jaws and say, "I am your wealth, I am your treasure." Then the Prophet recited this verse.

Everything is the Inheritance of Allah:

That is, the wealth you leave behind after death will go to your heirs, and ultimately it will return to the inheritance of Allah. Thus, it is mentioned in a hadith that the Prophetﷺ said: "A person keeps saying, 'This is my wealth, this is my wealth,' whereas his wealth is only that which he has eaten, worn, or given in the way of Allah. The rest of the wealth will be for his heirs." Also, someone asked the Prophetﷺ, "Which charity is the best?" Heﷺ replied, "That which you give while you are healthy, desiring wealth, hoping for riches, and fearing poverty. Do not delay so long that the soul reaches the throat and then you say, 'Give so much to so-and-so and so much to so-and-so,' for by then it has already become the property of so-and-so."
