(What is the matter with you?) When a single disaster smites you, although you smote (your enemies) with one twice as great, you say: "From where does this come to us?" Say (to them), "It is from yourselves (because of your evil deeds)." And Allâh has power over all things.

165. So when a calamity befell you (on the day of Uhud), you cried out [161], “Where has this come from?” even though you had already inflicted twice the loss upon them? Say, “It is from your own selves [162].” Surely, Allah is capable of all things.
[161] The case of the hypocrites is entirely different. Even the Muslims, apart from the senior Companions, thought that since we are fighting for the truth, in fact defending ourselves, and the Messenger of Allah himself is present among us, then the disbelievers can never prevail over us. But when they had to face defeat, they were deeply grieved and astonished. In response to this, Allah Almighty said: Allah granted you a great victory in the field of Badr. You inflicted double the loss on the disbelievers compared to your current loss, and at that time you were weak. So if Allah could grant you victory in that state, He can also let you face defeat, because He has power over all things. [162] The Causes of Defeat at Uhud:
As for the question of why you had to face defeat, its causes were also created by your own selves. You let go of patience, did some things contrary to piety, disobeyed the command of the Messenger of Allah, became greedy for wealth, quarreled and disputed among yourselves, so now why do you ask where this calamity came from?
