32. Abraham said, "But Lot is there." They replied, "We know very well who is there. We will surely save him and his family, except his wife, who will be among those who stay behind." [49]
[49] The Debate of Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) with the Angels Bringing Punishment Upon the People of Lut:
After this glad tidings, the angels informed Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) that, in fact, they had been sent on another mission. That settlement which is visible ahead, we have been commanded to destroy and ruin it, because the inhabitants of this settlement are rebellious and disobedient to Allah. The direction indicated by the angels was the region of Sodom itself, where Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) had sent Lut (علیہ السلام) for preaching. Therefore, he immediately spoke up: But Lut is also present there. Will you destroy and ruin this settlement while he is there? In this verse, only this much is mentioned. But in another place, the words ﴿يُجَادِلُنَافِيْقَوْمِلُوْطٍ﴾[11:74] are mentioned. That is, Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) fully debated with the angels, saying that besides Lut (علیہ السلام), such and such believer is also present there, and such and such as well. So how can you destroy this settlement while these people are present? The angels replied that we are fully aware of which believers are present there. We will first make arrangements to save them, only then will we destroy this settlement. However, among the household of Lut, the wife of Lut will also be destroyed by this punishment, because she is not loyal to her husband but is treacherous. From this answer of the angels, Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) understood that now the doom of this settlement was inevitable. In fact, due to the softness of his nature, he wished that this oppressive nation would be given some more respite to reform. But this wish of his could not be fulfilled, because the descent of Allah's punishment had been decreed.
